The Freedom Fighter Manual, 2012. Interactive installation, dimensions variable
The Freedom Fighter Manual was a 17-page document designed by the CIA in 1983 and airdropped over Nicaragua with the goal of overthrowing the elected government. It contained a series of instructions for public disobedience and revolt, ranging from seemingly banal actions such as ripping the pages out of books in public libraries, to more violent acts such as how to make incendiary or Molotov bombs. For this installation, I reproduced each page of the manual, silkscreening it with glow-in-the-dark ink, and set them all up against 3 motion-sensor security lights. As the viewers walk in, the lights are triggered and the content of the manual becomes invisible, unless they stand perfectly still for a few seconds.
